No Evidence Of Vehicle Malfunction In Deadly Toyota Crash In Escondido
Thursday, March 25, 2010
Authorities released the name today of a man who was killed in a solo car crash on a North County road.
Arnoldo Vacasefua Fuentes, 38, lost control of the 1992 Toyota Camry station wagon he was driving in the 200 block of East Ninth Avenue in Escondido shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.
The vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into a wooden utility pole, police Sgt. Doug Sams said. Fuentes, the sole occupant, died at the scene.
It was not immediately clear if intoxication was a factor in the accident, but excessive speed appeared to have been involved, Sams said.
There was no evidence of any malfunction in the vehicle's acceleration system, the sergeant said.
Toyota has recalled roughly 8.5 million of its late-model vehicles since November for various problems, including "sticking" gas pedals.
