The new millennium is marked by rapid growth and change in the media landscape. KPBS’ position as the local leader on radio is strengthened by a larger presence online. The station quickly becomes a powerful and trusted news source, especially during times of crisis. KPBS.org rises as the local online leader for wildfire coverage in October 2007, featuring Google maps and twitter updates.

Joan Kroc, 2010 KPBS Hall of Fame Visionaries Inductee.  Kroc’s relationship with KPBS and public radio began in the 1980s. She generously funded the equipment for the KPBS production center, for which she is prominently recognized inside KPBS.   Among the many gifts she bestowed upon her death in 2003, one of the largest was granted to NPR in excess of $200 million.  She also bequeathed $5 million to KPBS.

KPBS receives the largest donation in its history when the late Joan Kroc bequests $5 million. In addition, a gift to KPBS and NPR in 2006 called the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Project for Reporting Excellence lays the foundation for training journalists on multiple platforms. New projects include "One Book, One San Diego" and the acquisition of 97.7 FM in the Imperial Valley.

The year 2009 comes with a renewed excitement for the future with new General Manager Tom Karlo and the launch of San Diego Week on KPBS TV. A gift from Joan and Irwin Jacobs begins the process of redesigning the 2nd floor at KPBS to create a multi-media newsroom of the future.
