Candlelight Vigil Planned For Missing SDSU Student

A candlelight vigil was scheduled to be held at San Diego State University today for an exchange student who went missing while studying in Madrid, Spain more than a week ago.

Austin Taylor Bice, 22, an international business major and Torrey Pines High School alum, disappeared in the Spanish capital the night of Feb. 25.

Spanish police said he was last seen at a fast-food restaurant but never made it back to the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, about 20 minutes away. Concerned friends contacted authorities the next day.

The Agape House, an SDSU campus ministry organization, scheduled a vigil for 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. today on the campus's Free Speech Steps.

"This is an opportunity to come together as a community to show our support for Austin and his family in this time of difficulty," the group stated on the event's Facebook page. "It's a time to stand together in prayer and solidarity in support of Austin."

No program is planned for the vigil, but anyone wishing to speak will be allowed, organizers said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
