The fall semester begins Monday for students at San Diego County’s five community college districts.
Revenues from taxes approved by voters last year as part of Proposition 30 are trickling down to each campus. This year’s state budget included almost $500 million in funding increases and one-time incentives for the state’s community colleges.
For the more than 135,000 students attending one of the county’s community colleges that means more open seats in high-demand classes and more academic support.
The San Diego Community College District has added 400 class sections, Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges have added 240 classes and Palomar College in San Marcos will have 115 more classes this semester. Oceanside’s Miracosta College has added about 70 online and in-person classes and will hold its first classes in a new science building.
There’s also more money for student service. Veterans at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, for example, will get a new Student Resource Center.
