Deadline To Apply For El Cajon Mayor's Vacant City Council Seat

EL CAJON — Wednesday is the deadline to apply for the El Cajon City Council seat that was left vacant by the promotion of Bill Wells to mayor.

About 10 people had applied as of Tuesday, with more expected, according to the City Clerk's Office.

When Wells became mayor last month, replacing Mark Lewis, council members said they would sift through applications and decide whether to make an appointment to fill his term on the panel, which runs through November 2016.

An application form can be downloaded from the city of El Cajon website or obtained at the City Clerk's Office. It must be submitted by 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Candidates will be interviewed at the Dec. 10 council meeting. An appointment could be at that meeting.

Lewis resigned in October, citing health reasons. He had come under fire for making comments viewed as offensive by the East County city's large Chaldean population.

The City Clerk's Office plans to release the names of the applicants on Thursday.
