The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday backing the Port of San Diego's bid to host the 2017 America's Cup yacht races in San Diego Bay.
San Diego and Bermuda are the two finalists for the 35th America's Cup. The event was held in San Francisco Bay last summer.
San Diego hosted the event in 1988, 1992 and 1995, but those regattas were held out at sea off Point Loma. This time, the yacht races would be held in the bay to make the America's Cup more spectator-friendly.
"I just think this is a win-win," Supervisor Dave Roberts said. "We don't have to build any stadium — we don't have to build anything, and the economic impact to our region would be tremendous."
The America's Cup would further enhance a series of improvements that have taken place along the city's waterfront recently, including the park at the County Administration Center and renovations of the Embarcadero, Supervisor Greg Cox said.
The San Diego City Council is scheduled to consider a similar resolution at a special meeting Thursday.
Meanwhile, the supervisors also changed the official name of the county-run women's jail in Santee, which is completing renovations.
The East County facility had been called the "San Diego County Women's Detention and Reentry Facility." With approval by the supervisors, it will now be dubbed the "Las Colinas Women's Detention and Reentry Facility."
The jail has been informally associated with the "Las Colinas" moniker for many years.
