Editor's note: A previous version of the story referred to Mr. Wood as a Navy corpsman. This was incorrect. Mr. Wood' father, Dwight “Doc” Wood, was a Navy corpsman.

Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood is taking a leave of absence for undisclosed health reasons, the city announced Tuesday.

Wood, the mayor of the North County coastal city for 13 years, will remain away from the job through the City Council meeting of Aug. 9. The mayor holds a City Council seat.

According to the city, the former police officer is hospitalized and scheduled to undergo a medical procedure within the next week. His family is asking for privacy regarding his condition.

Deputy Mayor Chuck Lowery will fill in while Wood is out. The mayor's office will continue to be staffed, according to the city.
