Tijuana business groups want stricter city security

Tijuana business groups are imploring authorities to improve security in the city. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has more on the requests they made this afternoon.

The business groups are asking for federal agents to be brought to Tijuana to investigate high profile murders. Spokesman Daniel Romero says state and local forces have failed to do so satisfactorily.

Romero is also asking for an 11 o'clock curfew for minors that no alcohol be sold after 2 a.m. and for police to set up special operations in dangerous areas of the city.

The requests come on the heels of the violent murder of a businessman in Tijuana last week. Alfredo Cuentas Ochoa and his teenage son were ambushed in an upper class neighborhood. Authorities say they were trying to escape kidnappers.

Homicides hit a record high in Tijuana in 2005. Romero says it's urgent that the authorities gain the upper hand. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.

Prior to venturing into the wonderful world of public radio, Amy worked for Yahoo! Inc. for nearly five years as an editorial surfer, associate producer and broadcast communications manager. She majored in Latin American History at Williams College. She grew up in San Diego and made frequent trips south of the border.
