Airport ballot initiative gains support

The board of San Diego's Economic Development Corporation has voted in favor of the Airport Ballot Initiative.  Proposition A advocates negotiating with the military to use part of Miramar as a commercial airport for San Diego in the future. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The vote is interesting, since the Economic Development Corporation strongly supported keeping Miramar a military base during the last round of BRAC base closures.

But EDC President Julie Meyer Wright says BRAC estimated a 25 percent excess in military facilities around the country, but the last round of base closings only eliminated 10 percent.

Wright: So we need to be in an ongoing dialogue with the Department of Defense because if something should change, we need it very high on their radar screen that we need a new airport and Miramar is an ideal locale.

The board voted to support Proposition A only on the condition that plans to expand Lindberg Field through 2010 go ahead.

The EDC also specified that any future civilian airport should not adversely affect high tech businesses in the Miramar area. Alison St John, KPBS News.
