Environmentalists Suing Government for Holding Back Global Warming Report

Three environmental groups are suing the federal government. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco, claims the Bush administration is holding back a report on global warming. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace say Bush Administration officials are refusing to complete an assessment of how global warming is affecting the United States. The report is required by the Global Change Research Act of 1990. Julie Teel is a San Diego-based attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. Teel says the assessment was supposed to be completed two years ago.

Teel: The fact that it’s several years late now is really impeding our progress on making substantive decisions on climate change in this country.”

The lawsuit comes as the United Nations wraps up its world climate negotiations in Kenya. A report released at the conference shows the U.S., the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, is ranked 53rd of 56 countries in efforts to reduce the toxic emissions. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
