Oceanside school students got low marks on a state-mandated physical fitness test. The findings are included in a state report about how active students are in California. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Fifth, seventh and ninth-grade students take the state's fitness test every year. The report shows 80 percent of Oceanside school students failed to satisfy all of the required fitness standards. The study also shows 63 percent of ninth graders have poor cardiovascular endurance. Sean Helgesen is the physical education director at El Camino High School. He says teenage students don't see the importance of staying active.

Sean Helgesen: The older they get the harder it is to motivate them to stay fit and moving in PE class.

Helgensen says students' poor eating habits and sedentary lives are the blame for the low scores. Statewide about 73 percent of students failed to meet the required fitness standards. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
