Palomar Community College students will propose a campus-wide smoking ban to the facility’s planning board today. This is the first time the panel will consider the controversial proposal. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Student leaders at Palomar Community College are pushing to ban smoking on campus or restrict it to parking lots. But administrators are not in full support of the proposal. They suggest creating more smoking areas located away from students and buildings. Palomar spokesman Bruce Bishop says forcing smokers into the campus parking lot creates even more problems.
Bishop: There are liability issues, there are safety issues, there would be issues with students and other people loitering in the parking lots. And problems that would in and of itself would invite.
Bishop says student leaders must consider how the ban would impact faculty, staff and employees who smoke. Palomar would be joining a handful of colleges that have already banned or restricted smoking on campus. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
