A new study on global warming pollution shows California led the nation in harmful emissions over a 14-year period. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The group Environment California says its analysis of state fossil fuel consumption data shows that global warming pollution jumped nearly 20 percent in the U.S. between 1990 and 2004. Jessica Brinton is with Environment California. She says The Golden State has a tarnished record for emissions.

Brinton : California ranked first nationwide for most carbon dioxide emissions from motor gasoline consumption in 2004 and third nationwide for the largest absolute increase in carbon dioxide emissions from motor gasoline consumption over the 15-year period.

The report shows that the biggest increases in greenhouse gases came from cars and electric utilities. Environment California says the report fuels the need for nationwide standards for greenhouse gas emissions.
