A United Nations human rights expert kicked off a three week tour in San Diego today on Monday to look at how undocumented migrants are treated in the United States. Results of the tour will be presented to UN this summer. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Jorge Bustamante is the United Nations' special expert on migrants' human rights.
He says the U.S. State Department invited him to conduct the fact-finding mission.
Bustamante says though he's just begun his visit to San Diego, he sees a number of potential human rights issues.
Bustamante : The impunity of the Minutemen that are harassing migrant workers and the results of the raids on the disruption of families.
Federal officials recently arrested more than 350 illegal immigrants during early morning and late night sweeps throughout San Diego County. The arrests broke up many families.
The UN’s Bustamante will also visit Arizona, Texas and Florida. He'll tour two federal immigration detention centers that have recently come under fire for sub-standard conditions.
