Relief Coming to Clogged I-5

If you're stuck along a clogged stretch of I-5 near Del Mar at the moment take note. You may get some relief from the congestion by the end of the summer. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

CalTrans is adding two lanes in each direction on I-5 from Via de la Valle to Lomas Santa Fe. The stretch from Del Mar to Cardiff has been a congested bottleneck for years. The new auxiliary lanes work as a merging lane for drivers getting on and off the freeway, helping to reduce congestion. The southbound lane is expected to be completed by early June, the northbound lane in September. CalTrans Engineer Mohammed Kahn says there are also plans to extend the carpool or HOV lanes on that stretch of I-5 too.

Kahn: If that next job starts in August we're looking for at least a year, year-and-a-half before the HOV lanes would be constructed. And then that would kind of really help the traffic.

He says those carpool lanes will be extended two miles in both directions on 1-5 from Via de la Valle to Manchester Avenue. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
