The San Diego school board gave High Tech High the go ahead to open a new charter school in Mission Valley. It will be the first public school in the area. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
High Tech High is a charter school organization with campuses in Point Loma. Officials want to expand to Mission Valley because research shows a rapid influx of families will be living there. But some community activists worry that as a charter, the school will attract too many students from outside the neighborhood. School board member Katherine Nakamura says the district had its chance to build a traditional public school in Mission Valley, but officials didn't feel there was a need.
Nakamura: I wish we could have made the numbers work for us to put a school up in there but our demographers didn't feel that way. So High Tech High has stepped up to the plate. And I think it's a solid choice and I think it’s good for the community as well.
Right how there are more than 900 school age kids in Mission Valley, but they won't be guaranteed spots at the new charter school. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
