The group representing water agencies in the state is launching a new media campaign to let people know about what it considers a crisis. The Association of California Water Agencies -- or ACWA -- is planning radio, television and print ads detailing the problems facing the Delta. The region serves as a hub, funneling water from north to south. But a federal court order to reduce pumping in the Delta to save an endangered fish may reduce water supplies. ACWA Executive Director Tim Quinn says people need to be educated about it.
Quinn: It is likely that the voters will be asked to make decisions in the voting booth about water, and our view is that those choices will be more intelligent, they will be more supportive of solutions that work if they are aware of the dimensions of the problem.
The Governor has called a special session of the legislature to tackle the issue. But Quinn says they won't get into the controversial solutions, which could include new dams and a possible canal around the Delta.
