Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Cate Blanchett reprises her role as Elizabeth (Universal)

Actress Cate Blanchett and director Shekhar Kapur collaborated in 1998 to make the film Elizabeth , about young Bess' ascension to the throne. Now, almost ten years later, they reteam to bring another chapter of Queen Elizabeth's life to the screen. Elizabeth: The Golden Age (opening Oct. 12 throughout San Diego) finds the British queen facing a formidable Spanish fleet as well as the charms of Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen).

After her first taste of playing Elizabeth, Cate Blanchett has obviously realized what a juicy role she is and now returns to sink her teeth further into the character. Maybe she and Kapur will continue to revisit the role in the decades to come as Blanchett ages along with her onscreen character. Now that would be an interesting, extended artistic collaboration.

Elizabeth I rules! Literally. Though I felt the first movie with Blanchett was better than this recent follow-up, I do believe "they" did a good job capturing the spirit/essence of HM Queen Elizabeth I. -----
