The American Institute of Architects in San Diego is working with city and county officials to simplify the process of rebuilding communities devastated by the region's wildfires, officials said today.
The AIA, working in conjunction with the AIA California Council, is using programs developed after San Diego's wildfires in 2003 to facilitate the rebuilding process.
Local AIA chapters will conduct workshops regarding the design, permitting, and constructing process, and how to work with city and county agencies to expedite permitting, allowing residents to get back their homes as quickly as possible.
With the input of architects, the state Office of Emergency Services and the AIA developed protocols enabling AIA volunteers to assist in the safety assessment and inspection of residential and commercial buildings.
San Diego architect Kirk O'Brien, who has provided inspection assistance following multiple fire disasters in San Diego County, encouraged residents to pay close attention to specific safety notices posted by certified inspectors in cases where homes may be partially damaged and are still standing.
