The National Weather Service is warning of high seas, heavy rain and strong winds associated with a storm system that is expected to move into the area beginning Thursday and are expected to last though the weekend. The Coast Guard strongly urges boaters to remain in port during this time. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jetta Disco.
Disco: This is a pretty big storm that's going to be affecting San Diego. So we want to make sure that we get the advisory out as soon as possible to mariners so they can prepare themselves.
She says that preparation should include required safety equipment such as lifejackets for everyone on board and signal flares. The Coast Guard suggests boaters also equip their boats with GPS, a marine VHF radio, and 406Mhz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and as a backup precaution carry a cellular phone. But Disco says recreational boating is not advisable for the next couple of days.
