Poll Shows McCain and Romney in Tight California Race
A new Field Poll shows John McCain and Mitt Romney battling for first place in California's GOP presidential primary. Former frontrunner Rudy Giuliani virtually dropped off the radar. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps joins us now with details.
McCain and Giuliani switched places in just one month. In December, Giuliani was on top and McCain was polling fourth. Now: 22 percent of likely Republican voters say they favor McCain. Giuliani is tied for third with Mike Huckabee. Mark DeCamillo is director of the Field Poll.
DeCamillo: Rudy Giuliani has literally been off the stage over the past month, as the early primaries have progressed in different parts of the country. He has chosen not to participate directly. And what that's done is allowed his opponents to introduce themselves to voters, to make voters more comfortable with them, to raise their awareness.
DeCamillo says Mitt Romney was a virtual unknown in California until recently. Now he's in second place among GOP candidates.
