The San Diego Unified School Board is set to authorize another hefty round of layoff notices. This time the notices will be issued to school employees like campus security guards, teaching assistants and custodians. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
The district's initial projections show officials want to eliminate close to 1,100 non-teaching positions. That means one in seven school employees could receive a layoff notice.
More than 900 positions affect teaching assistants in the classroom, libraries and special education department.
Gustavo Padilla is with the California School Employees Association. He says he can't believe the district is putting these jobs on the chopping block.
Padilla: We're basically the nuts and bolts of the school district. You're looking at positions and people that work directly with the students and provide support services to the parents.
In addition to the eliminated positions, the district wants more than 320 employees to scale back their hours. District officials say they have to take this action now because they're facing a possible $80 million loss in state education funding next year. School trustees are expected to vote on a final number of layoff notices next week.
