San Diego County Health officials say two more local residents have tested positive in a nationwide outbreak of food poisoning. The salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 552 people across the country. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

A total of three people in San Diego have been infected with a strain of the disease called Salmonella Saintpaul. Health officials say one of the cases was acquired locally. The outbreak has been linked to certain types of raw red tomatoes.

Health officials say Florida and Mexico appear to be the likely source.

San Diego County epidemiologist Michelle Ginsberg says salmonella causes unpleasant symptoms.

Ginsberg : Diarrhea, with fever, sometimes vomiting. Most people will have a relatively mild illness, with stomach upset, and recover fully.

Salmonella is not a rare disease. But health officials say it is unusual to have so many cases linked to a common source.
