Tom Fudge:
If you talk with someone in Imperial County, and you ask for a telephone number of someone else who lives in the county, you'll get the number. But they'll only give you seven digits. That's because everyone in Imperial County has the same area code: 760.
The Public Utilities Commission is planning to divy up the 760 area code, which is also used by people in Northern San Diego County. And, the Imperial folks assumed that they wouldn't be affected. But people in Carlsbad don't want to change their area code either, and now there's a great rowe over who's going to get stuck with the new phone number prefix, which, by the way, will be 442.
The area code conflict is one of the stories we're talking about during this Imperial Valley update.
