A handful of California state employees misused state vehicles and got pay they weren't entitled to and it cost the state roughly $200,000. Those are the findings of a new report by the Bureau of State Audits. Marianne Russ reports.
According to the audit, the biggest chunk of money improperly paid out came from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It gave two doctors $108,000 pay they shouldn't have received. And nine corrections office technicians got a total of nearly $17,000 in extra pay they weren't entitled to.
Other examples include an employee from Housing and Community Development who worked simultaneously at the department - and at a non-profit that was getting grants from the department.
The audit also found a Fish and Game employee took her child to school in a state-owned vehicle, and a State Water Resources Control Board staffer used a state phone to make 54 hours of personal long-distance calls.
The auditor reports that some of the employees are paying the state back.
