Police say 22-year-old Luis Felipe Dos Santos and three of his friends were stabbed repeatedly by a group of unidentified men early Saturday morning.

Dos Santos died at the scene. The others are in stable condition.

The stabbing took place just steps away from the university's police station. Campus police are not saying how many officers were on duty that morning or where they were.

Lt. Kevin Rooney is with San Diego Police. He says they're hoping an autopsy and more evidence might uncover clues.

Rooney: Fibers or blood that might have been transferred from a suspect to a victim during the struggle, there's always a possibility that a suspect became injured as well during the fight.

Dos Santos was a student at Mesa Community College but was living near SDSU. His friends describe him as the "life of the party." In fact, he was walking home from a house party when he and the others were assaulted.

Mesa College and SDSU officials say they're offering psychological counseling at both campuses to grieving students.

SDSU's Gina Speciale says the university also has a crisis hotline.

Speciale: So if anyone is experiencing any kind of distress over this or wants to talk to someone about it, we have therapists that are available.

Flowers and pictures of Dos Santos lay at the scene of the crime. SDSU officials say they consider the stabbing an isolated event, and don't plan to step-up security. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
