A new report from UCLA shows the number of California children who are overweight has declined. But researchers say other health indicators for California kids aren't so good. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
The report shows the overall health picture for low-income children is grim.
Two-thirds of all uninsured kids in California are from low-income families. And there's been no improvement in health coverage for kids ages five and younger.
Between 2001 and 2005, the percentage of children who went to a private doctor for their primary care fell nearly nine points. During that same period, the percentage that used public clinics or emergency rooms rose by about nine points.
UCLA researchers say there's been a steady decline in access to care for poor children.
On the plus side, more young kids have seen a dentist once a year. And statewide, more children are enrolled in preschool.
