A new report provides insight into which groups of Californians voted for or against Proposition Eight last month. That's the measure that banned same-sex marriage in the state.
The PPIC survey illustrates just how deep the divide over prop.eight runs.
Three in four Republicans voted yes; two in three Democrats voted no. Evangelical or born-again Christians were far more likely than others to vote yes, and majorities of Latinos, those 55 and older-and voters without a college degree supported the measure. The ban on same-sex marriage passed by a four-point margin last month.
Another notable finding of the survey: Californians expressed more trust in their fellow voters than in elected officials to make public policy. 37 percent have either a great deal or a fair amount of trust in the state's elected officials to do that job.
Just over half have the same level of trust in fellow voters to make public policy at the ballot box.
