The California EPA says the state should immediately reduce the toxic substances in products and manufacturing processes. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has more.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger asked the state's Environmental Protection Agency to develop broad recommendations for a chemical policy.
It's part of a plan by the state EPA to eventually eliminate many toxic materials.
Maureen Gorsen led the initiative for the Cal E-P-A.
She says there are six recommendations. They include cutting chemicals in products.
Gorsen: The lifecycle approach: looking at design of products, as opposed to just the by-products of industrial production of those products. And moving to a benign-by-design environmental protection policy.
Other recommendations include creating new markets for green products, expanding pollution prevention and giving consumers easy access to information about the chemicals in the products they buy.
