The San Diego County Water Authority is extending its rebate program because of overwhelming response. The rebates are offered to spur water conservation. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has details.
The San Diego County Water Authority offers a rebate to offset the purchase of high efficiency clothes washers.
Another conservation program provides incentives to upgrade outdoor watering devices.
Because the response has been greater than expected the water authority's John Liarakos says the board is adding $2.5 million to the programs.
Liarakos : People are really getting on board with conservation programs and trying to save water. We wanted to make sure these rebates are still available to the public, so the board acted to provide more funds.
Liarakos says 8,700 washer incentives were redeemed last fiscal year and that's more than doubled this year.
He says participation in the Smart Landscape program also has nearly doubled during this year.
The landscape program increases water conservation through a combination of services and water-saving devices and includes grants for commercial properties.
