More than 200 weapons were surrendered in a gun exchange program in a south eastern San Diego neighborhood this morning.
The event was organized after two teens from Lincoln and Point Loma High Schools were shot and killed two weeks ago, while leaving a party.
Pastor Ikenna Kokayi is with the United African American Ministerial Action Council . He says the program offered $100 gift certificates to anyone who surrendered a weapon, no questions asked.
Kokayi: : It was an overwhelming success. We picked up 239 weapons and I would have been able to even get more guns but since all of this was donated funds, I just ran out of money.
The Pastor says just over 10 thousand dollars was donated by individuals and community groups, in an effort to get guns off the streets.
He says today’s experience convinced him it’s worth organizing more gun buy back programs, and he plans to look for corporate sponsorship.
