A San Diego city council member wants to start dealing with the city’s budget deficit now, rather than waiting until spring. KPBS reporter Katie Orr explains.
Fourth District Councilman Tony Young chairs the city’s budget and finance committee. The panel traditionally begins meeting in April. But Young says the committee should start working with the Mayor now given the projected 54 million dollar budget deficit for next year.
Young: By the time we are seeing the budget, and then, being able to respond to what his proposal for the budget is, it’s only a matter of a few weeks. And these are such serious times here, that those two weeks are just not enough. I don’t think they were ever enough.
Young says the committee has already met once and will convene again next week. He says in February there will be several meetings around the city to gather ideas on the budget from the public.
