A program that's been teaching generations of San Diego students about the city's history might become a thing of the past. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The San Diego Unified School Board is considering cutting the district's longtime Old Town Historical Program.
The five-day retreat introduces kids to the people and cultures of Early San Diego through museum tours and outdoor activities.
But the program costs $1.6 million to operate every year.
Program supporters are urging the board to preserve the program. Old Town business owner Karen Spring says students learn about things not found in textbooks.
Spring: As the first Western settlement of North America, Old Town San Diego plays a significant role in American history. The community is not just a hub of cute stores and M exican restaurants. But instead offers our children a unique opportunity that is second to none in the nation.
District officials say cutting the program is one of the many options they're considering as they brace for more budget cuts next school year.
