The unemployment rate in San Diego County rose slightly in July, increasing to 10.3 percent up from a revised 10.2 percent the previous month, a state agency reported today.
The state's unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 12.1 percent last month, up from 11.6 percent in June, according to the California Employment Development Department.
The national jobless rate was steady at 9.7 percent last month, according to the EDD.
Between June and July, the San Diego region shed about 15,400 jobs, most due to a decline in government payrolls, according to the EDD.
Responding to the latest figures, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said, "These numbers indicate that we must do everything possible to get California moving forward again. We must fix what is broken in this state - whether it is our water infrastructure, our prisons and pensions systems or updating our tax structure - these are the critical issues that need to be addressed to rebuild the Golden State."
The governor added, "These reforms along with our on-going efforts to jumpstart the economy and put Californians back to work will ensure that our state is on a direct path to recovery."
