Alpine brush fire extinguished in 15 minutes

Despite critical wildfire conditions, crews made quick work Thursday of a blaze that scorched less than an acre in an open field on Viejas Indian Reservation.

Flames began spreading off Browns and Oaks Owl roads in the Alpine area just before noon, according to a sheriff's dispatcher. Firefighters got the blaze under control within about 15 minutes, she said.

No structural damage or injuries were reported. The cause was under investigation.

The fire broke out in an area subject to a "red flag" wildfire warning issued by the National Weather Service this week due to prevailing dry, warm and windy conditions. The precautionary period was set to expire early Thursday evening.
