A 20-year lease renewal for Barrio Station, a nonprofit that serves youth in a disadvantaged area just south of downtown San Diego, was approved Tuesday by the City Council.
The facility at 2175 Newton Ave. offers low-income and at-risk youth ages 6-18 a gymnasium, an auditorium with a stage and a swimming pool. According to staff, it has operated since 1980, making it one of the oldest Latino community organizations in San Diego.
Barrio Station provides recreation, educational and cultural programs, and offers career and education support, after-school activities and organized community volunteer efforts.
The lease, in which the city will charge rent of $3,412 in the first year and make annual inflation adjustments, was passed unanimously on the council's consent calendar.
