La Jolla Planning Group OKs Proposed Performance Hall

A 500-seat performance hall planned for downtown La Jolla received a unanimous go-ahead from a community planning group, project supporters said Friday.

The $65 million Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, also known as The Conrad, would be the future home of the La Jolla Music Society if it clears all the regulatory hurdles and gets built.

The La Jolla Community Planning Association unanimously approved the 44,000-square-foot project at its Thursday night meeting.

The building also would include a 150-seat multi-purpose room, rehearsal rooms, offices for the music society and a large courtyard.

"The Conrad will enrich the cultural life of San Diego and will serve as our organization's new permanent home," La Jolla Music Society board chairwoman Katherine Chapin said. "Tonight's unanimous approval is a fitting testament to our board and team's commitment to create a new community asset developed at no taxpayer expense, in the heart of the La Jolla."

The building will be available to rent for weddings, conferences and other uses.

Backers hope to break ground next year and have it ready to open in 2018.
