The first day of Sweetwater Union High School District’s new online school year was only hours old Monday when a student was taken into police custody for brandishing a firearm during a virtual classroom session.

San Diego Police Department officers were called to the home of a 15-year-old student who attends Southwest High School in the South Bay. The firearm was found to be a BB gun, according to district spokesman Manny Rubio.

The student, who was not identified, apologized for what he described as a “dumb joke,” Rubio said.
