On Wednesday, the Museum of Photographic Arts began a silent film festival. You still have time to catch their impressive selection of German expressionist films including “Metropolis” and “Nosferatu.”
My apologies for not highlighting this sooner since the festival opened with the work of silent clowns Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. My bad. But I urge anyone who loves film to make an effort to see the marvelous marathon of German expressionism MoPA has selected. Beginning today at 2:30 you can see Fritz Lang’s sci-fi masterpiece “Metropolis;” followed at 5 by Robert Wiene’s boldly designed “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari;” then at 6:30 the original vampire movie, F. W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” with the creepiest actor – Max Schreck – playing a bloodsucking count; and finally Murnau’s “The Haunted Castle.” These films will also repeat on Saturday.
If you have never seen these films, then the opportunity to catch them for the first time on a big screen is an opportunity not to be missed. And if you’ve seen them before, then there’s nothing like savoring and appreciating the stunning visual design of these films up on the big screen where they belong.
