Culture Lust Weekend: 'Surf Report,' Skateboard Art, And Protected Ping Pong

ART

Take a tour through the mind of John Antoski this Friday at Subtext. His exhibit “Each to Their Own” lives up to its name by featuring everything from colorful two-dimensional illustrations to wooden three-dimensional creations. As his website boasts, “be brave, take a stroll” - we definitely will.

Skateboarding, art, music and hope all come together this Friday in Encinitas. Ron Cameron, skateboard artist and enthusiast (since 1976 when he received a GrenTek ‘Spoiler’ for Christmas) is presenting “Dismantled Hope,” along with his long time friend, musician Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. The exhibit combines skateboards, photographs, paintings and sculpture.

This Saturday or Sunday, head on over to Golden Hill to view (or purchase!) over 100 works by Fred Hocks. Originally from Germany, Hocks settled San Diego in 1930. The painter embraced the coastal culture and the mid-century modern scene, giving him the title of “dean of the San Diego moderns.”

We’ve already recommend MCASD's "Here Not There" exhibit, but this week (in part because of the mention of latex outfits) we absolutely had to feature Saturday's evening of performance art. San Diego artists will be playing ping pong inside a cylindrical bubble, creating art while riding a tricycle, making doom metal music from hand-made drums and tooling around in latex outfits and respirator masks. They had us at ping pong.

Culture & Cocktails is tonight at the San Diego Museum of Art. Check out "Heroes Mortals & Myths in Ancient Greece," make some stuff (Greek crown making), and witness San Diego artist Brian Dick's national “Museum Mascot" project. We're guessing he won't have one of those t-shirt guns, but you never know.

Examine the meaning of beauty this Tuesday during "Conversations on Beauty" at the San Diego Museum of Art. Panelists from diverse backgrounds will discuss the concept of beauty from different perspectives. Panelist James Hubbell believes beauty is making a comeback in contemporary art. What do you think?

You can get a feel for the AMSD venue this Friday night while seeing another gifted songwriter, J.D. Souther.

Join soundON in celebrating their fourth annual Festival of Modern Music at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. Hosted by NOISE, San Diego new music’s chamber ensemble-in-residence, this three day event features music concerts, open rehearsals and a performance workshop where guests can join NOISE in a performance.

Tonight, the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture is presenting an evening of classical music. Compositions by Cesar Franck and Edvard Grieg will be played by pianist Victor Stanislavsky and violinist Asi Matathias at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium.

ARCHITECTURE

On Saturday, the American Institute of Architect's San Diego chapter holds its Annual Design Awards in an appropriately beautiful building, the Neurosciences Institute. Celebrating the best in building and design, the ceremonies will be hosted by UCSD grad, Jeopardy winner and blockbuster actor ("Avatar"), Dileep Rao. Doors open at 7pm so get out your cool eyeglasses and head to La Jolla.

THEATER

Turbulent waters and tumultuous relationships come together at the La Jolla Playhouse. Written by San Diego native Annie Weisman, "Surf Report" is set right here in SD, so listen for all the local shout-outs.

Families fall apart, power seduces man into madness, and shrews are tamed this summer at the Shakespeare Festival. Between "King Lear," "The Madness of George III" and "Taming of the Shrew," we could not be more excited to cuddle up in the beautiful outdoor theater (bring a blanket, it gets mighty cold out there at night).

Head to The Celebration Center to experience love, heartbreak and a trip to the 1920’s. Featuring Emily Bergil and G. Scott Lacy, “Kidding on the Square” is a cabaret not to miss. Monday night only at 7:30.

Maybe it just slipped off your to-do list, but this is the final week to watch the Ion Theatre Company perform "Frankie & Johnny in the Clair De Lune". Reviews have been great so should be a good bet.

Also at Ion, It’s not every day we can watch Steve Smolinski save humanity from destruction at the hands of bloodthirsty elves, all from his cubicle! (How many of us can say we're ever half that productive in our cubicles?). Head to BLKBOX @ 6th & Penn this Sunday for Ion Theatre Company’s final performance of "Gam3rs, The Play".
