EVENTS

Last summer it was the gala of the season and this year we’re anticipating nothing less. This Saturday, The New Children’s Museum is hosting their 3rd annual summer gala, Party Animals! The entertainment? Third-Eye Blind. The menu? Animal-free food from some of our favorite San Diego chefs. The dress code? Your favorite animal. The best part? Helping children at San Diego’s neediest schools experience and appreciate art in new ways.

This Saturday, sample over 76 different beers at the Del Mar Beer Fest. Between the beach bar, the “Pacific Pavilion” and $15-for-5-7oz-sample wristbands, it’s an all day party! And even though it’s been a while since we’ve heard from Weezer, they’ll be playing and we’re excited to hear their pending album release.

MUSIC

Breaking the boundaries of both Jazz and pop, the Industrial Jazz Group updates our concept of a big band. Lead by self-described “hack composer and pseudo-intellectual” Andrew Durkin, this 17-man big band plays this Friday at Dizzy’s.

This weekend, local, national and international blue-grass bands will be gathering in North County for the 8th annual Summergrass Festival. Camp, picnic or just bring your sunscreen for the family-friendly weekend of music, food and impromptu jam sessions. Noteworthy appearances: John Reischman and the Jaybirds, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Special Consensus and Bluegrass Etc.

Classical music at a jazz club? Yep, we’re talking about Luscious Noise where members of the San Diego Symphony gather at a decidedly non-classical, venue, Anthology. It’s a symphony for the digital age, where multi-media meets Mozart.

Six-piece Canadian indie rock band Hey Rosetta! is coming to Belly Up on Saturday. Between the piano, violin, cello and Tim Baker's lyrics, should be a great show.

ART

We are terribly intrigued about artist Richard Gleaves' new work "Liquid", which goes on view this Saturday at OMA. Inspired by his childhood on the California coast (and his fishermen brothers) Gleaves has constructed an 8-foot cube out of 19,000 feet of monofilament fishing line. Museum goers are instructed not only to look at it, but to walk through it, and even under it (please tell us how this goes) “to experience the sensation of Liquid.”

"Magical Michoacán" opens tonight at Balboa Park’s Centro Cultural de la Raza. The exhibit will feature the traditional clay, wooden and metal Michoacán artwork by women from Ocumicho.

THEATER

What better way to celebrate the end of "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" than with the appropriately titled “Love Struck”? The La Jolla Playhouse is ushering out Shakespeare’s comedy with another edition of Performances + Cocktails on Saturday night. The evening includes a music/cocktail mixer, an outdoor art show, a vintage apparel showing, a "high-fashion" runway show, and ends with a performance of the play.

One of the greatest satirists in American history will be celebrated this weekend. Actors will read and perform Mark Twain's short stories in Twain Told Tales at the Old Town Theater. On Saturday, wordsmith Charles Harrington Elster will sign copies of his novel "Test of Time," which follows a time-traveling Twain.

FASHION

Prada, Dior, Gucci, Paige and Juicy are just a handful of the headliners at tonight’s Fashion Bash. So hold on to your hats and designer glasses because things get rowdy at these pre-sales. Sassy City Chicks is hosting the event at the top of Hard Rock Hotel Float Rooftop Lounge - the event is $3 admission or $10 admission for a giftbag!
