More than 30,000 people are expected to turn out Wednesday for the fifth annual Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. Organizers are happy with how the bowl game has developed.
The Poinsettia Bowl features a match-up this year between the Cal Bears and the Utah Utes. The Poinsettia Bowl is the junior version of the more prominent Holiday Bowl which is now celebrating 32 years. Bruce Binkowski is the Executive Director of both bowl games. He says the Poinsettia Bowl has established itself in a short time.
“When we started the game we knew we would have attendance in the range of 30,000 to 40,000,” he says. “We have hit those goals every year. The game is financially strong. And it’s really earned its niche as a pre-Christmas bowl game.”
Binkowski says he can see the game potentially drawing a crowd of 50,000 if the match-up is really strong one year. He says last year’s game created an estimated $17 million economic impact for San Diego. Kick-off is at 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 23rd.
