SDSU Certificate Breaks Down The Business Of Beer
San Diego State will soon offer a certificate for anyone who has thought about turning an interest in local brews into a professional pursuit.

Craft brewers may not wear suits and ties to the office but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of serious business going on in the growing local industry.

San Diego State University will start offering classes this summer as part of a craft brewing business program for people interested in the professional side of suds. Extended Studies Program Director Giana Rodriguez said the six-class certificate will cover facets of the industry from marketing to serving.

“We’re going to be looking at the history of craft beer, we’re going to be looking at very particular flavor profiles, blind tastings, knowing what your beers are, knowing how they’ve grown from the beginning of the craft beer movement to now, how to serve beer, know what glasswear to use, how to store it,” she said.

Classes will be taught by local industry professionals and Rodriguez said the idea is to give students a chance to network with San Diego's craft brewers.

SDSU joins universities like Portland State, Oregon State, Colorado State and Central Washington University in offering courses on the craft brewing business.

Students will be able to complete the certificate in about a year. Each class costs $269 and lasts four to six weeks.
