Push For Sustainability In Poway Unified School District

Parents, students and teachers want the Poway Unified School District to recycle more of the waste generated at school. The idea is to save money and landfill space.

The group recently submitted a proposal to the Poway Unified School District on ways to save on waste management costs by increasing recycling.

Sarah Boltwala-Mesina is a parent of two students that attend elementary school in the district. She said the group wants to encourage more environmentally-friendly practices at the district.

Boltwala-Mesina said replacing non-recyclable plastic foam food trays would be a good start.

"So we would like to see how much more does it cost to introduce compostable trays or recyclable trays in the least," said Boltwala-Mesina. She said the Poway District uses more than one million plastic foam trays each year.

Boltwala-Mesina said it's possible a group of volunteers could maintain a recycling program at the school district.

She said the group plans to have a town hall meeting next month to encourage more people to get involved in the sustainability effort.
