San Diego State University is suffering from a heat wave. A water main break has left the county's largest university without air-conditioning, and the problem is throwing a wrench in the university's back-to-school preparation.
This week is important for faculty and staff at San Diego State because the fall semester begins on Monday. Preparing under sticky, hot, sweaty conditions can be downright intolerable.
A major water line that supplies cooled air to most of the university broke earlier this week. Due to extreme heat conditions in some of the buildings, officials are sending faculty, employees and some students home.
Professor Matt Anderson says that poses a problem for some who have a lot of prep work to do.
“Some of the offices are intolerable. It’s not healthy to be sitting in that kind of heat,” Anderson said.
Anderson’s colleague, professor Satchi Venkataraman, says he hopes the problem gets fixed before classes begin.
“I don't want classes to be canceled on Monday because it will just create chaos,” Venkataraman said.
“I think come Monday everyone is going to be wearing their bathing suits to school,” Anderson added.
Campus officials had said the air conditioning should be fixed by this weekend, however the water main break is more extensive than they originally thought. Crews are now working around the clock and hope to have the break repaired by Monday.
