Water Main Break Leaves Sinkhole In Escondido

A water main break next to an elementary school left a massive sinkhole and shut down an Escondido road Tuesday morning.

The break occurred at approximately 4 a.m. at Broadway Avenue and 3rd Avenue. It sent tens of thousands of gallons of water gushing through the streets. A 10-inch concrete main somehow burst, ripping up the roadway and leaving a massive sinkhole across from Central Elementary School.

The concrete main only supplies water to the school, city of Escondido crews said. Water would be rerouted to the school through a temporary sideline prior to the arrival of students. As of 6:45 a.m., there was no word that classes would be delayed or canceled.

A Sig Alert was issued at 5:42 a.m. Broadway Avenue was shut down between 2nd and 5th avenues. People were advised to use Maple or Kalmia streets instead. The length of the closure was not immediately confirmed.
