Strong Rip Currents, Elevated Surf To Last Through Friday

The swell that has been making waves at San Diego County's beaches will weaken Friday, but strong rip currents and larger than average surf will persist through Friday night, forecasters said.

A National Weather Service beach hazards statement for the county's coastal areas is set to remain in effect through 8 p.m. Friday.

"The large swell from Tropical Storm Marie will gradually diminish today," according to a weather service statement. "However, the surf will continue above average and strong rip currents and longshore currents will continue at the beaches throughout the day."

Forecasters said 3- to 5-foot surf is expected Friday, with occasional sets that could reach 6 feet, especially at beaches north of Oceanside.

The currents could result in dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, according to the weather service. Beachgoers were advised to obey posted warning signs, use caution in and around the water and to swim near a lifeguard.
