A sewage spill prompted a pollution alert Wednesday along a waterway near La Costa Country Club Golf Course.
A problem with a sanitation line caused an estimated 1,950 gallons of effluent to overflow along Redwing Street in San Marcos, according to the county Department of Environmental Health.
Utility crews were able to recover about 825 gallons of the wastewater, but the remainder entered a storm drain that empties into San Marcos Creek.
Signs warning of contamination hazards will stand at access points to the stream near the golf course until follow-up testing deems the area safe again for human contact.
