A 47-year-old concrete water main ruptured in Normal Heights early Tuesday, leaving some area homes without running water and a nearby freeway onramp closed as crews worked to make repairs.
The break in the 6-inch diameter pipe at the intersection of 32nd Street and Madison Avenue knocked out water service to the even-numbered addresses in the 4600 block of 32nd Street and to odd-numbered addresses in the 4600 block of Iowa Street, city Public Utilities Department spokesman Arian Collins said. Several apartment buildings are in the affected area.
Collins said a water wagon was sent to assist residents.
The onramp from Madison Avenue to northbound Interstate 805 was closed as crews worked to repair the break, he said.
Water service was expected be restored early Tuesday afternoon and the onramp reopened late this afternoon.
