A spring heat wave will keep San Diego County toasty Tuesday, but forecasters said cooler weather and April showers are in store for later this week.
On Monday, a record thermometer reading of 90 degrees in Chula Vista topped the old April 18 record of 84, set in 1999; and in San Diego, a high of 87, topping the 83-degree mark recorded in 1914, according to the National Weather Service.
Summer-like weather is expected to continue Tuesday as high pressure remains aloft. High temperatures Tuesday were predicted to be 75 to 80 degrees near the coast, 82 to 87 degrees inland, 83 to 88 in the valleys, 75 to 81 degrees in the mountains and 92 to 97 degrees in the deserts.
"High pressure will dominate along the West Coast through the middle of the week," according to the weather service. "This will keep conditions on the warmer side, especially inland."
But forecasters said a storm system was expected to hit the region by the end of the workweek and bring a chance of rain late Friday into early Saturday. The return of low-pressure conditions is also expected to lower mercury readings to around average levels by this weekend.
